Bundesliga title not enough to save Kahn and Salihamidžić

If you were looking for drama on the final matchday of the Bundesliga season, you came to the right place with Bayern Munich claiming the title after Borussia Dortmund’s failure to beat Mainz. Despondency at the Signal Iduna Park and glory at the Rhein-Energie Stadion wasn’t however enough to save the jobs of CEO Oliver Kahn and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic, both of whom have been relieved of their positions.

Bayern had been expected to announce changes at the upcoming supervisory board meeting on Tuesday, but despite an amazing turnaround and a clinching of yet another Bundesliga title, the Rekordmeister have revealed that major changes are already afoot.

Jan-Christian Dreesen will take over from Kahn as Bayern CEO with Hasan Salihamidžić also being replaced by an as yet unknown person. “Jan-Christian Dreesen has done an exceptionally good job for FC Bayern over the past ten years” revealed President Herbert Hainer today. “He lives at FC Bayern, knows the club inside out and knows what is important here. We are very pleased that he has accepted this task. He can tackle without getting used to it, and that’s exactly what FC Bayern need in the current situation.

“The decision to separate from Oliver Kahn was anything but easy for the Supervisory Board. Nevertheless, due to the overall development, we have come to the decision to make a new appointment at the top of the Management Board. We would like to thank Oliver Kahn for his commitment, his ideas and for everything we have achieved together. He will always be a big personality at FC Bayern. We wish him all the best for the future.”

Boom!

The season may have ultimately ended on a high, but that has not been enough to save the job of sporting director Salihamidžić. “The course of this season after the winter break and differing opinions about the future direction of our team have prompted us to reach an agreement with Hasan Salihamidžić to end his position immediately. The decision was difficult for us.

“Hasan has played a key role in all of our national and international successes since 2017, including victory in the Champions League, six German championships, the European Supercup and the Club World Cup. In a constructive, respectful conversation, Uli Hoeneß and I shared our decision and reasons with Hasan. On behalf of FC Bayern, I would like to thank Hasan Salihamidžić very much for his work, his commitment, and his identification with FC Bayern. We wish him all the best for the future. He will remain a friend of FC Bayern.”

Boom!

If anybody thought the final whistle in today’s matches was going to bring the end of the dram this season, they were very much mistaken. Bayern are champions yet again, but the triumph is tinged with frustration that it wasn’t won in the Bayern way. Kahn and Salihamidžić have paid the price for not winning the Bundesliga title in the correct manner.
