Ex-Barcelona Club Chief Drops Dose of Reality on Messi Reunion Plans

Jaume Llopis, an economics professor, a senator for FC Barcelona, and a manager with current club president Joan Laporta, dropped a dose of reality to the club’s supporters. 

Currently, there’s an all-time high optimism regarding the possibility of Messi returning this summer after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires in June. Nonetheless, Llopis hopes supporters aren’t holding their breath.

In a recent interview, he told MARCA that the return of the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner is “one more lever.” Furthermore, Llopis assures that “[Messi] will not come” since he considers it to be “another smoke screen” to cover up the club’s problems.”

Messi’s future is uncertain for now as contract extension talks with the capital club have reportedly stalled. Meanwhile, Barcelona’s financial situation is a serious hurdle they’re attempting to overcome. 

Furthermore, if it’s accurate that the Argentine wants another crack at winning the UEFA Champions League, it rules out a move to MLS. Inter Miami has been keen on signing the player, but they might have to wait another year.
