Ex-Messi Teammate Reveals Worst Moment for PSG Star With Argentina National Team

Lionel Messi has endured a rollercoaster of emotions during his time with the Argentina national team. The high came last December when the Paris Saint-Germain star lifted the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

However, before that, there were many lows and defender Marcos Rojo, who was on the national team for some of those moments, stated that the lowest moment for the 35-year-old came during the 2016 Copa América Centenario in the United States. 

“For everyone, I never saw so much sadness together as on that day,” Rojo told TyC Sports. “It was already the third we lost. The World Cup hurt, but it was the World Cup final; it can happen. In Chile, we had played very well and we lost again.

“We flew that Cup; we broke it. We screwed up all the teams and we didn’t get it again.”

Messi missed the penalty kick against Chile, allowing their South American rival to claim the trophy. The moment was another disastrous international tournament for Messi, as many wondered if the Argentine would ever lift silverware for his country.

Nonetheless, fast forward six years and not only does Messi have one international trophy, but he has two as Argentina are currently the reigning Copa América and World Cup champions. 

The PSG star appears ready to defend Argentina’s Copa América crown next year when the competition is again held in the United States. Messi hopes to rewrite that history in his legacy.
