Lionel Messi will be suspended for two weeks after Paris Saint-Germain dropped the bombshell on the football world after the 35-year-old took an unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia.

While the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner will be out for two matches, French football pundit Johan Micoud believes that PSG is at fault, considering that Messi had a deal with Saudi Arabia as an ambassador before signing and knew of his obligations.

“As soon as he signs in Paris, they know he has a contract with Saudi Arabia,” Micoud said on La Chaîne L’Equipe Thursday (h/t Paris Fans). “And he’s missed the trip twice. They could have worked it out. You’re not going to tell me that after Lorient, they couldn’t have said to him: ‘Come on, go for it.’ We needed a sanction, but from there we went into this delirium. How can we put a sanction like that? There, we are talking about Messi anyway.

“It has been football for 15 years. And he never made waves in his career. The slightest thing, we make a sanction that I have never seen in my life. You realize, he doesn’t even have the right to go to Camp des loges. We walk on the head there. I find that there is a terrible lack of class. You will never see that elsewhere, at Bayern or Real. It’s not far from shabby.”

If Messi should play for PSG after his two-week suspension, it will be interesting to see how the supporters receive him after apologizing. Nonetheless, there’s also the idea that Messi might not play a game ever again.

The Argentine will see his contract expire in June and he will become a free agent. Should PSG feel the supporters will boo him heavily, perhaps the capital club might believe the two sides should part ways before the 2022-23 season ends.
