Manchester United keeping tabs on Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini, journalist reveals

After it has been revealed that Premier League giants Manchester United are monitoring the situation of Atalanta promising defender Giorgio Scalvini, the Get Italian Football News team had Italian football journalist Mirko Di Natale provide his insight on the potential move in the transfer market.

Despite the 20-year-old’s contract only expiring in the summer of 2028, the Red Devils are keen on the Italian international as a result of his superb breakout season last term, as well as his fine run of form this season as he has featured in 16 fixtures in the Serie A thus far under Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

Furthermore, Scalvini’s exponential growth and remarkable ability to defend has earned him the trust of Azzurri coach Luciano Spalletti, as the rising star has made seven appearances for the Italian national team since his debut in the summer of 2022.

Mirko touched upon whether he foresees the departure of the €40m defender to Manchester United being a genuine possibility in the winter transfer window, or if it is a move that is more likely to occur at the end of 2023/24 season:

“From what I know, Manchester United are looking very closely at defenders within the market. The club really likes Giorgio Scalvini, but I know they are also following Radu Dragusin from Genoa. I think they intend to make a move in January in that role, but there must be ideal conditions”

Mirko revealed that several other European giants were also keen to enter the race for attaining the services of Giorgio Scalvini:

“The top English clubs really like Scalvini, just as he has recently been linked to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.”

Furthermore, Mirko discussed ideal alternative signings in the center-back role in the case that Scalvini departs for a top club within the near future:

“Atalanta has started to move, certainly the interest in Dragusin can make us understand more about Scalvini’s future. An interesting triangle could arise in January: Real/Varane, Scalvini/ManUtd and Dragusin/Atalanta, but to date these are only hypotheses.”
