The Lionel Messi era at Paris Saint-Germain is ending on a disappointing note as the capital club reportedly suspended the 35-year-old for two weeks due to an unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia.

Sky Sports News’ Kaveh Solhekol shared some insight into the partnership between the club and player as the two sides head toward an inevitable divorce this summer when Messi’s contract expires in June.

While many might see the two seasons as a failure due to PSG’s inability to win the UEFA Champions League, Solhekol says both sides got what they wanted.

“So from a commercial point of view, if you speak to people at PSG, they will say, look, this makes sense,” Solhekol said Thursday on Sky Sports. “We made money from this deal. And also, of course, Lionel Messi has made a lot of money from this deal as well. But both parties have decided that now is the right time for him to leave.

“I think PSG could have maybe tried harder to convince him to stay if they had wanted him to stay, but I think his heart is set on leaving Paris … but I think it was good while it lasted. Everybody achieved what they wanted to achieve, but now is the time to move on.”

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was able to play at a high level while earning high wages to prepare for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which he won in Qatar last December over France and Kylian Mbappe.

Meanwhile, PSG did receive new sponsorships during the two seasons, which was welcomed considering the capital club dealt with the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic that affected their finances.
