The most eagerly anticipated game in Group E will see Spain take on Germany at the Al Bayt Stadium on Sunday night.

The Germans will be desperate to bounce back following their humiliating 2-1 defeat to Japan in their group stage opener. An Ilkay Gundogan penalty gave Germany a first half lead and it looked like they’d ease to a comfortable victory. However, Japan staged a stunning second half comeback with Takuma Asano scoring a late winner to shock the former World Champions.

It means Germany are now under huge pressure to get a positive result on Sunday night or they face the prospect of an early exit from Qatar.

Spain on the other hand got their 2022 World Cup campaign off to a dream start after thrashing Costa Rica 7-0. Barcelona youngsters Pedri and Gavi masterminded the impressive victory and it was certainly a statement of intent from the Spaniard’s.

Betting odds

Spain are the joint 7/1 second favourites alongside England and France to win the World Cup. Germany have fallen to 26/1 outsiders following their loss to Japan. So it’s no surprise to see Spain priced as the 13/10 favourites to win this match-up. You can get odds of 19/10 on Germany claiming all three points while the draw is priced at 12/5.

Spain win 13/10

Draw 12/5

Germany win 19/10

A narrow Spain win is the most likely outcome and a 2-1 victory can be backed at odds of 8/1. Ferran Torres should start up front once again for Spain and he’s 13/2 to open the scoring. If we back Torres to score first in a 2-1 Spain win, the odds increase to 59/1.

Team news

All eyes will be on Pedri and Gavi once again to see if the Barca youngsters can replicate the superb performances they produced against Costa Rica. Spain manager Luis Enrique has plenty of options if he wants to rotate his squad to give other players a chance. The likes of Pau Torres and Eric Garcia could come-in to the defence while Alvaro Morata will hope to start after scoring off the bench last time out.

Germany boss Hansi Flick is expected to make changes following their disastrous defeat to Japan. Leon Goretzka could start in midfield while Youssoufa Moukoko, Leroy Sane and Julian Brandt are options to come in to the attack. Chelsea’s Kai Havertz had a poor game last time out so he may drop to the bench.

Prediction

All the pressure is on Germany to get a result as another defeat would make it extremely difficult for them to reach the knockouts. They can’t play that poorly again but Spain were hugely impressive in their first game and will be confident of beating their old European foes. It should be a closely fought game but we’re expecting Spain to edge it. Spain 2-1 Germany
