Jorge Mendes on Jose Mourinho’s Roma sack: “I wasn’t expecting it”

Jose Mourinho’s agent Jorge Mendes has spoken up about the manager’s sacking from Roma, providing details about how things were for the Portuguese.

Mourinho was sacked two days ago by Roma, who have already hired Daniele de Rossi as an interim manager. Mourinho’s Roma were ninth in the Serie A and before the loss to Milan, they had been knocked out of the Coppa Italia after a loss to Lazio.

Mendes spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport about the sacking of Mourinho, stating that he loves Roma and he stated his sacking was a surprise even to him.

“I was surprised. I wasn’t expecting it. But before I go on, let me say something.” 

He further stated: “José was the first manager at United who won three trophies after the great cycle of Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill, with a team that was not on the level of the one with Beckham and the other champions of the past. José returned to Chelsea and he won the Premier League again. With Tottenham he was sacked before playing in the Carabao Cup final. With him Roma won a European competition again (the 2021-22 Conference League, ed.) after I don’t know how many years. Mourinho He’s a winner.”

On how Mourinho is right now, Mendes stated: “He has a clear conscience. He knows he worked hard and well despite Roma having a more limited squad than Inter and Juventus.”  

Mendes also stated that the Friedkins never spoke to Mourinho a contract renewal, stating: “Never. There was no negotiation.”

He also revealed that it is too early to speak about Mourinho’s future but did provide details about the links with Saudi Arabian clubs. 

“The Arabs already called him, months ago, and made him a crazy financial proposal, but he decided to continue with Roma because he loves it.”
