The damning facts behind Sampdoria’s demise this season

Sampdoria’s defeat to Udinese yesterday all but confirmed their relegation from Serie A for the first time in 12 years and for the fifth time in the club’s history. While Samp deserve relegation, the numbers don’t make for a great reading for a club which is facing steep financial issues.

The Blucerchiati have collected only 17 points from 34 games and they have picked up only three league wins, while having the worst attack and the worst defence in the league so far. Curiously enough, it was exactly 12 years ago from yesterday that Samp last went down to the Serie B in the 2010/11 season after losing to Genoa but they returned to the top flight a season later – something Genoa have done this season.

As of now, Samp are in a debt of over €200 million, while having strict deadlines to meet and payment of player salaries still pending. No new owner has come forward to buy Samp for Massimo Ferrero, who remains incapable of financially supplying the club.

Dejan Stankovic has failed to arrest the slide since he was signed as a replacement for Marco Giampaolo, who had failed to make a mark in his second stint at Samp despite having revolutionised the club in his first stint. Their points tally of 17 so far is the worst in the club’s history and that says a lot about where they are and Sampdoria might be in the worst place in their entire history.
