Why Inter’s Champions League game v Atlético Madrid marks Lautaro Martinez’s destiny

Inter have drawn Atlético Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League, with the tie one of the closer ones in the next round.

Inter were of course last season’s finalists whilst Atlético Madrid have reached two finals in the last 10 years. The game will be big for many reasons. Diego Simeone and Simone Inzaghi were teammates at Lazio and even won a Scudetto together.

The game will also be big for Lautaro Martinez. In 2018, as reported by Sky Italia, he was 99% sure of a move to Atléti, before moving to the Nerazzurri at the last minute. He then announced himself as an Inter player with a big goal in the International Champions Cup during pre-season, against none other than Atlético Madrid.

Having just been ranked 20th in the Ballon d’Or and making an incredible start to this campaign, this could be the chance for Martinez to carry his team to Champions League glory, especially since a club he could have joined can come in the way of a march.

Inter fell short to Manchester City in the final last year but will have the confidence that they can go all the way and win the competition for the first time since 2010.
